  "A traditional RPG. Very traditional."

Though virtually unknown in the US, this game has had quite a history in Japan. Originally released in Japan as Eiyuu Densetsu IV: Akai Shizuku, this game is actually the second game in what is known as the Gagharv Trilogy. It was first released in 1996 on the PC in Japan, and later remade for Windows in 2001. The PSP version is more or less a port of the 2001 version. Still, it is one of the first RPGs released on the PSP.

In Legend of Heroes, you take on the role of Avin, a 17-year-old on a quest to rescue his sister. In the prologue it is revealed that as children, Avin and Eimelle (his sister) were orphaned and lived together in the Cathedral of Bardus, the God of Light. However, one day, the Cathedral was attacked by followers of Octum, the God of Darkness. The two siblings were separated in order to hide them from Octum's Apostles. Avin is entrusted to Sage Lemuras, who lives outside of a small village known as Ourt. In Ourt, Avin meets Mile, who will become his best friend. When Avin is 17, Lemuras passes away and Avin sets out to find his lost sister.

Legend of Heroes is a traditional RPG, with a huge emphasis on "traditional". If you're expecting a revolutionary RPG, look elsewhere. That isn't to say that there aren't any varied qualities in the game. First off, there is the "Pet" System in the game. Essentially, throughout the game, a pet follows you. You can feed it, praise it, and scold it. The pet can also find hidden items. Depending on its mood, he will randomly attack enemies, or support you in battle. Another uncommon feature in the game would be a lack of random battles. In other words, monsters appear on the basic journeying field and you can avoid them, which I've always seen as a good thing. You can even tell how powerful a monster is through an emoticon over its head (An angry monster is strong, an indifferent monster is unaware of your presence, and a sad monster is weak). Another odd feature in this game would be the fact that there are two different sets of currency: Pia (which is commonly dropped by monsters) and Rozes (which are more commonly used in cities). You can even exchange money of one type for another when needed.

Each of the characters can cast either Black (attack), White (Healing) or Spirit (spirit-based) spells, as well as "Deadly Techniques" (which can be used when their power bar is full). Each also possesses specific skills which can be used to steal items, draw attention to one character, and even increase your stats or decrease an enemy's. Other than that, this game seems like your typical, uninspired, turn-based battle, dungeon crawl, long journey RPG - That's not necessarily a bad thing.

The graphics don’t really showcase the power of the PSP, but with the blending of 2D sprites and 3D environments, it looks very good. The characters are super-deformed on the game field as is the case with older RPGs. When you speak to important characters, they are displayed with well drawn full-sized character portraits.

The sound is pretty generic, to say the least. The soundtrack is mostly bland, which is disappointing considering this is an RPG. The sound effects are average for the system. What disappoints me most is the lack of voice acting. Even if it were just for the spells (which are cast through text boxes), it would still be better than nothing.

On the subject of replay value, this game's pretty good if you like traditional RPGs. With four chapters of storyline to play through, it's pretty long and will definitely keep you busy for awhile. While it’s still a solid RPG, Legend of Heroes could have been more original. I'd recommend this game to anyone with a PSP, itching to play a classic RPG.

That's your opinion. Sure, there are a few good songs, but most of it is bland and generic. Though it does portray the atmosphere that it intends to.
